How To Make Your Home Appealing By Cleaning And Decluttering

Posted by on

When it comes to selling your home, having a clean and tidy space can really make all the difference. Selling is all about making a positive impression, and whether consciously or unconsciously, an untidy or cluttered property may influence buyers negatively. It doesn’t take much, often it’s just a few small things and a matter of being thorough with your cleaning, and you’ll have your home dressed to impress. Below we’ve offered our own handy guide to the steps you should be taking in order to clean and declutter your home.

Keeping It Clean: It may seem obvious - everyone wants their house to be clean regardless of whether or not they’re looking to sell. But when it comes to staging a property it’s not just about being clean, it’s about giving off an aura of freshness and that sparkling just cleaned look. These are our top tips for how to achieve that effect.

Be Thorough

The first, most simple, and most obvious step is to go through your house inch by inch. Don’t forget to take care of the outdoors areas too! Whether it’s giving the lawn a trim, or quite literally mending fences, the exterior is just as important as the interior when it comes to selling your house. by inch and clean every surface and object. We suggest making a whole day of it, dusting, scrubbing, vacuuming, polishing and anything else that is required. This also includes any minor repairs and work that needs to be done.

A New Coat Of Paint

One of the most effective ways to make your home seem new, fresh, and appealing to prospective buyers is to give it a new coat of paint, on both the interior and the exterior walls. However, when painting the exterior, do keep in mind that warmer temperatures may cause the paint to dry quicker than expected, and always check the weather forecast beforehand for expected rain!

When it comes to both the interior and the exterior, it’s important to keep in mind the style of your home, as well as the opinions of potential buyers. Bright colours on the exterior can be an easy way to add to that all-important curb appeal, and sleek but neutral colours on the inside provide an accomplished finish that won’t put off prospective buyers. Alternatively, having your home professionally painted can be a tremendous investment, increasing the value on your home without expensive costs.

Moving the Furniture

It may not seem like a big deal, but rearranging the furniture can be a great way to subtly yet dramatically change the complexion of a room, impacting how potential buyers react. Here are some small tips that can make a huge difference:

  • Move your couch away from the window, as sunlight can cause fabrics to fade and the glare may be too harsh

  • Keep low standing bookcases, shelves, and tables away from entrances. This eliminates the potential for items and clutter to be left on them and gives buyers a clear path when they enter

  • If you have a small space or room, try to avoid having large items in it, and keep any furniture small and simple

  • In larger spaces, “float” furniture into the middle of the room and away from the walls, to make the room seem more inviting

  • Build your room around an alternative focal point to a television, such as a fireplace or a piece of art

Keep Things Fresh

You may have heard the tales of REALTORs® and homeowners baking bread before a viewing in order to permeate the homes with that appetizing aroma, but you don’t have to go quite so far to make a good first impression! The key is to make sure your property smells fresh, clean, and inviting without seeming intrusive. Here are some of our personal favourite ways to freshen up your home:

Air Purifiers

As indoor air is more easily polluted and can grow stale and cloying without ventilation, an air purifier can be a great permanent solution to make sure your home always feels fresh - even when the weather means you can’t open the windows.

Potpourri And Other Natural Scents

That classic arrangement of oils and flowers, Potpourri is a tried and trusted way of bringing a soft and pleasing scent into any room. However, if you want something a little more unique, you can utilize citrus fruits to make a DIY pomander adorned with cinnamon and other aromatic spices. A similar effect can also be achieved using scented candles, with vanilla being a popular choice that gives your home a pleasant sweet smell.

Plants aren’t just for your garden. Growing an indoor plant can be a great way to brighten up a room and it also gives you a sustainable source of herbs for cooking. Common choices include Basil, Mint, and Rosemary.

Clear Out The Clutter

When it comes to staging a property and really impressing prospective buyers, it’s not just untidiness that can be a problem. Even neatly stacked and arranged items can be too much stuff. The ideal is a happy medium, with neatly arranged books in bookcases, framed photographs and a few personal belongings to make it feel lived in, while still letting the buyer imagine how they would use the space. That leaves the question of what you should keep, and what should be thrown away or kept in storage. With that in mind, we have some helpful tips and one golden rule.

The Golden Rule

"If you haven’t used it in the last year - it’s time for it to go"

We know it sounds harsh, but the truth is, unless you have a deep sentimental attachment to an item, if you aren’t using it, you probably don’t need to keep it around. There are some ways you can help clear your home.

Make An Inventory

The best way to make sure you keep what you need, and get rid of what you don’t, is to make a detailed inventory of everything, sorted by category. You can even make notes next to each item, as a way of testing their worth. Chances are if you can’t write anything next to it, you also don’t need it.

Catalogue items and divide them by category in order to keep track of them. Planning will help you make the right choices as you sort through all your belongings. And if you’re still struggling, you can always binge watch Tidying Up With Marie Kondo - just don’t use it as procrastination!

Dispose Of Your Items Responsibly
