Family Storytime

Sidney 2018 Family Day Weekend

A LEGO Brick Festival will happen February 10th, 11th and 12th, 2018 from 10 am to 4 pm each day. Sidney restaurants and businesses will be open to welcome families.

The theme this year is SPORTS & RECREATION and back once again is Robin Sather, Canada’s only certified LEGO professional. This year Robin will build an incredible 6-foot LEGO hockey goalie structure. Saturday the fun will start with the launch of the LEGO brick scavenger hunt throughout downtown Sidney. Maps will be available at the Sidney Museum and event locations for avid hunters to begin their quest. The Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea will have underwater LEGO and VicLUG will have an intricate display of LEGO creations at the Sidney Pier Hotel all weekend.

The Star Cinema will be showing the Peter Rabbit during the weekend as well! On Sunday & Monday, all the fun continues as Robin completes construction of his work of art at the Mary Winspear Centre. Visitors will help Robin build a giant LEGO mosaic. The Mary Winspear Centre will also have LEGO play areas for all ages and a community open house where families can learn about the activities available to family and youth in the Sidney area.

Collage Poems, Letters and Envelopes

Join poet Wendy Morton for an afternoon devoted to the love of written letters and the envelopes that hold them. Create collages on envelopes using old photographs, poem fragments, beautiful napkins and magazines. Supplies provided. Registration begins January 2.

Family Fun Hike - Guided Walk – 5 years+

Enjoy a walk in the park with your family to celebrate Family Day weekend! Join a CRD Regional Parks naturalist and discover the beauty of this wooded parkland. Bring a snack and water, and wear sturdy footwear. Meet at the kiosk in the Aylard Farm parking lot off Beecher Bay Road.

DigiLab: Photo Booth

Saturday, February 10th: Family Movie Night – Despicable Me 3: 5:30pm
Monday, February 12th: Free Biking Lessons with Adam Walker: 10:30am-12:00pm (Kids 8-10), 12:30-2:00pm (Kids 11-14). Free swimming will be offered at the NLRC from 12-4pm. Bring your child (age 6-14) out to Bear Mountain for a free lesson on chipping and putting from 2-3pm.  Whether they are a seasoned golfer or just beginning we guarantee they will have fun.

Love is in the Park - Guided Walk – All ages

Come discover what animals are breeding in the park. Participate in family fun and all age-appropriate activities related to tree frogs singing, eagles cart-wheeling, hummingbirds dancing, owls hooting and more. All sorts of excitement is in store for Esquimalt's 2018 Family Day Event. Join them for Kindergym, skating, swimming as well as a variety of games and activities that you can do as a family – and do it all for FREE.

This event includes an Esquimalt favourite: a by-donation Esquimalt Lion’s BBQ (see menu HERE). All activities take place in the recreation centre with the exception of the Family Skate which is in the arena at the Archie Browning Sports Centre.

Tsukino-Con 2018

Tsukino-Con is a not-for-profit, community-oriented convention held annually at the University of Victoria with a focus on anime fandom and Japanese culture.The name “Tsukino-Con” literally translates to “Convention of the Moon.” This relates to the location of the convention, the University of Victoria, and the ring road that surrounds the campus.

Attendees 11-14 years of age must have a parent or legal guardian sign their parental consent form for registration and must also be accompanied by an adult at the time of check-in. Children 10 years of age and under receive free entry but must be registered by a parent or legal guardian in person at the convention and be accompanied by an adult during the convention at all times.

While we will not be accepting canned food item donations as a means of ticket payment this year, we will have a donation-only raffle. One canned food item valued at $1.00 or more will equal one raffle entry. There will be no limit on how many raffle entries you can acquire. We deeply appreciate your continued support of the UVic food bank!

Museum Tots: Valentine's Day

Join us as we explore Victoria’s Inner Harbour and discover more about BC’s maritime heritage and culture! The tour starts at the Maritime Museum of BC and go around the Inner Harbour, up Wharf St., through Bastion Square, down Government Street, and back to the Museum. Victoria has an abundance of two great things, beautiful historic churches and delicious chocolate. Join us on a 3-hour guided walking tour that combines a history & architectural tour of three places of worship with a food tour where we will sip and sample chocolate from local businesses.

On this guided tour we will visit 3 places of worship including the Christ Church Cathedral, St. Andrew Cathedral, and the Congregation Emanu-El Synagogue. We will get a behind-the-scene look at these three historical buildings and hear stories of how they came to be and what makes them architecturally significant.
