Posted by on

No matter whether you’ve recently moved to the Island, have made it your home for years, or if you’re a prospective buyer wondering what it may have in store for you, you’ll be interested to know what there is for you to do and enjoy with your whole family on Vancouver Island.

It’s undoubtedly a great place to raise a family, and we think this list highlighting some of our personal favourite family activities on Vancouver Island, showcases exactly why that is.

1. Beacon Hill Park Petting Zoo - Victoria

Situated within the lush surroundings of Beacon Hill Park, the petting zoo at the Beacon Hill Children’s Farm is the perfect place to get up close and personal with nature, in a way that will be sure to create lasting memories for you and your family.

This hands-on experience encourages children to learn more about the world around them, and to extend compassion and empathy to animals, as well as giving them a chance to meet a wide array of different species. From the extremely popular goat petting area, through to more exotic species such as alpacas, finches, and pheasants, as well as friendly and sociable animals like potbelly pegs and miniature donkeys, there are no shortage of amazing animals to meet and greet.

2. Ventureland Playground – Parksville

Both the playground and the splash park adjacent to it have gained iconic status within the Parksville area, and have become a go to spot for play and excitement for both local families and visiting tourists.

It’s a testament to the enduring timeless appeal of the playground that it’s often revisited by older generations when their own children and grandchildren are young. And, if you want to unwind from all this excitement, there’s a serene sandy beach nearby for you to take a gentle stroll along.

3. Butchart Gardens - Saanich

Butchart Gardens is an iconic, must visit attraction for anyone visiting Victoria. We’re sure your children probably aren’t clamouring for a visit to a picture perfect garden, but the experience is also catered to help make it fun for the whole family.

With the garden’s design ensuring you wont get lost, or spend hours aimlessly wandering, there are also a litany of fun activities and special treats, such as the Rose Carousel, a menagerie of 30 hand-carved wooden animals and chariots.

And if there’s one thing kids and adults love, it’s ice cream, so why not try the Italian classic of rich creamy gelato at the fantastic Gelateria Benvenuto, located in the Italian Garden.

4. Ed Macgregor Park - Sooke

The Ed MacGregor Park offers a chance for you and your family to go on a truly captivating and memorable oceanside stroll. Dedicated to Sooke’s first mayor, the park offers waterfront woodland trails, a public pier overlooking the rolling waters, a series of stunning walled gardens, and much more.

And, if you want to engage with the park a little bit more, they also have an events area, amphitheatre, and artwork displays showcasing their current artists in residence. The pier is stroller friendly, meaning a trip to the park is an accessible, enjoyable, and unforgettable experience.

5. Elk Falls Suspension Bridge – Campbell River

Sitting 60 feet above the surging waters of the Campbell River Canyon and stretching for 64 metres, there are few sights in the region more breathtaking and awe-inspiring than the Elk Falls suspension bridge. And that’s before you take a look around and see the waterfalls, looming boulders, and iconic old growth forests that surround it! It’s the quintessential west coast experience, and one you and your family should not miss out on.

6. Goldstream Park - Langford

Goldstream Park can feel like you’re wandering through a dream, or at least some far flung corner of the natural world, with it’s towering trees such as the ancient 600 year old Douglas Firs that call it home, as well as the array of flowers and animals wandering between them.

The fact that it’s only 16km from downtown Victoria, turns the whole thing into something of a hidden paradise, and the ideal family day out when it comes to experiencing the beauty of nature, without an arduous trek.

Plus you can check out the Nature House, a hub of environmental education which offers unique activities and programs to educate the public about the history and importance of the Park.

7. Kinsol Tressle – Shawnigan Lake

Located near Shawnigan Lake, the Kinsol Trestle isn’t just one of the most iconic sights associated with the region, it’s one of the largest and most impressive rail trestles in the world.

Spanning 187 metres in length, and standing 44 metres high, the trestle passes over the Koksilah River. Most importantly for a family journey, the trail is an easily accessible, flat 1.5 kilometre walk through pleasant forest, and can boast being both wheelchair and stroller accessible.

There are also a number of smaller trails that you can stroll meander through at your leisure, walking along sparkling riverbanks, and indulge in a bit of birdwatching amongs the kingfishers and swallows.

8. Miniature World - Victoria

As much as the area is rightfully famed for its outdoor beauty and exciting activities, the weather doesn’t always comply, and we can’t imagine your idea of a fun family day out is trudging through the rain. Luckily there are whole worlds to explore indoors, whole worlds so small they can be contained within one building, and what’s been described as the Greatest Little Show on Earth!

Enter a fantastic wonderland at Miniature World, where you can marvel at some truly outstanding miniature creations, such as space 2201, King Arthur’s Camelot, and the magical Fantasy Land.
